Day One of the 2019 Wimbledon Games

Day One of the 2019 Wimbledon Championships can be summed up in one word, “UPSETS”.

Here we go…Day One…Round One…

The Upsets for the Women…

  • The second “seeded” reigning US Open and Australian Open Champion, Naomi Osaka of Japan, was UPSET by Yulia Putintseva, ranked #27, of Kazakhstan. (7-6, 6-2) a truly surprising and outstanding Upset
  • Venus Williams, of the United States, was UPSET by 15-year-old fellow American, Cori “CoCo” Gauff, (6-4, 6-2) Cori is the youngest player to qualify for the main draw of Wimbledon during the open era which began in 1968. This era began when the Grand Slam tournaments began to allow professional tennis players to compete against amateurs. This was also an outstanding upset
  • 22nd seeded Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia, was UPSET by the 28th ranked Su-wei Hsieh of China. (6-2, 6-2)
  • Aryna Sabalenaka, ranked 10th was UPSET by 17th ranked Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia. (6-2, 6-4).
  • Marketa Vondrousova, ranked 16, of the Czech Republic, was UPSET by 87th ranked Madison Brengle of the United States. (6-4, 6-4) another outstanding upset.
  • Caroline Garcia of France, ranked 9th, was UPSET by Shuai Zang of China, ranked 50! (6-4, 6-0)
  • 29th ranked Daria Kasatkina of Russia, was UPSET by 47th ranked Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia. (6-3, 6-1)

The Upsets for the Men…

  • Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic, ranked 124th, UPSET 6th seed Alexander Zverey of Germany. (4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5) (This was an OUTSTANDING UPSET)
  • Thomas Fabbiano, of Italy, ranked 13, UPSET 7th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece. (6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3)
  • 16th ranked Gael Monfils of France, had to retire due to an ankle injury during the 5th set of the 1st round to Ugo Humbert of France ranked 66! (6-7, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, 3-0)
  • 32 ranked Dusan Lajovic of Servia was UPSET by Hubert Hurkacz of Poland ranked 53. (6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4)
  • Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, ranked 43, was UPSET by Corentin Moutet of France, ranked 84! (2-6, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3, 6-1)

There may have been some UPSETS but there is no denying, there have been some great games!  So stay tuned more excitement to come!
