Mayweather VS Pacquiao

The biggest fight in this decade is within a few days. Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will grace the boxing ring at Las Vegas MGM on May 2nd, 2015. This fight is long overdue, but should go down as a history maker. There’s much built up excitement by the media and fans alike. This is what boxing use to be. The top/best boxers meet up in the ring to fight…plain and simple!

As great as this fight should be, unfortunately I don’t think it’s enough to revive the sport. The sport is sorely lacking superstars. Back in the day we had such greats like Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Forman, Larry Holmes, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Mike Tyson, and many more. Whether heavyweight or lightweight, they all held their own and were a positive impact to the sport. Within the last 20 years, how many of you can name any impactful (or well-known) fighters not named Floyd or Manny?

One of the major problems I see with boxing is the over commercialization of the sport (especially with the fights that most people want to see). Pay per View ( PPV) may be the disease causing death to the sport. I can remember when big ticket fights like Sugar Ray vs Hagler was on public TV (free to the viewing public).

There’s so much money involved and that’s great for the fighters, promoters, etc… but not so much for the fan or potential fan. I’m hearing MGM ticket prices are ranging from $1500 to $7500 and PPV prices near $100. What’s the incentive to fight hard when the money is so great on both sides or does it really impact the effort? I would guess one of the major incentives is legacy for this particular fight. The winner of this fight will be known as the greatest of this generation. Will there be a possibility of a rematch? I don’t think so. These guys are already aged for the sport. But, depending on the outcome there’s a possibility to make these men much wealthier.
