…..AND THEN THERE WERE TWO!

July 5th, 2019 By: LVOS Admin (10 Comments)

It all started on June 7, 2019 with twenty-four teams coming together to compete for the eighth installment of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Women’s World Cup France 2019. After many weeks of intense nail-biting games, Team USA and the Netherlands defeated their opponents in the semi-finals and advanced to compete against one another for the championship game.

USA defeated England (2-1) without their starter Megan Rapinoe, due to a hamstring strain. USA again demonstrated they are a strong team deeper than the starting 11 and without blinking an eye Christen Press joined the starting line and scored within 12 min of the game. As all women love getting gifts, for a birthday gift to herself, Alex Morgan scored the second goal and politely celebrated by having a sip of tea with the world; however, there is no denying, Goalie Alyssa Naeher had one of the most memorable plays of the game! USA holding strong 2-1 and Alyssa staring down Stephanie Houghton shooting a penalty kick, instinctively dove to the right successfully stopping the goal that could have tied the game. Team USA was able to maintain the 2-1 lead to advance to a spot in the Championship game.

Team Netherlands defeated Sweden (1-0) scoring in extra time.  Jackie Groenen saw an opportunity and took the game winning kick pass the Sweden team to score. Team Netherlands won and advanced to the Championship game.  This is the Netherlands second run in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Games and first time to the finals.

Team USA and Team Netherlands will meet on Sunday July 7th, 8:00 AM PST /11:00 AM EST at the Stade de Lyon for the Championship game.  We all have the stats and records to determine the “Favorites” and “Underdogs” but if you know like I know, for championship games everyone comes to win so be ready to tune into an exciting game!
